Mountain Therapy
The mountains of the Fjarðarbyggð
(Fiord Settlements) region give this part of Iceland its distinctive character,
and have a huge influence on the lives of the people who live here. Just
to live in these fiords, surrounded everywhere by beautiful mountains,
is a source of great inspiration and solace for all the inhabitants. To
us, it is almost as if the mountains reach out and embrace us when we
arrive, bid us welcome, and give us feelings of belonging and well-being.
Within the Fjaraðabyggð region there are more than 20 marked hiking
trails ascending peaks, crossing mountain passes, or following the coast
between fiords. There are in addition more than 20 unmarked trails which
follow routes through the mountains that have been used for centuries,
and can still be travelled easily and safely when the weather is fine.
The two lodges for hikers in this part of the East Fiords are both located
in the Gerpir area between Reyðarfjörður and Norðfjörður,
which is widely regarded as one of the best hiking areas anywhere in Iceland
- and which also includes the country´s easternmost headlands. And
for those who prefer to stay closer to the road, there are a dozen or
so shorter walks to easy lookout points, spectacular gorges or other significant
scenic or natural attractions.
Whether it is in actively exploring the network of trails through the
spectacular mountains of the Fjarðarbyggð region or simply relaxing
in one of the local swimming pools surrounded by mountain vistas, the
therapy of this region is everywhere available to anyone who delights
in unspoilt natural beauty. So come and join us in our "mountain
therapy", relax and unwind, and enjoy the peace of being in this
always beautiful place.
